Last Saturday of the show was very nice, I had a lovely long walkthrough talk with Kristen Lucas and Joe McKay. I had a nice chat with an old friend about the Geomancy Sketch that pops up in my main piece for the show, which was something I was fiddling with while I was in a SFPC class. I also think my typical fretting during the installation and opening overshadowed the really nice interactions I was having in the space on the first two nights. I had a great long talk with my super talented studio neighbor Scott Gelber and I got to meet and talk to Lauren Gardner from Babycastles/SFPC.
Alright, so after a brief doldrum episode, what next? De-install is happening over the next few days. I’m also going over the piece of admittedly rambly writing that I did to go with the show and I’m extracting the mining stuff from the written language/textui stuff and adding it as a Mining section in the Dungeon Mode chapter of my Thesis writing. The goal now is to turn that chapter into a standalone Dungeon Mode book with the writing mixed with full page dungeon map tilemap art, I think I’d like to do it by hand rather than with WFC or another algorithmic method. My idea is to start with a room from grotto and then draw a maze around it.
I would also like to take the stuff about written language and do a separate book that is color and filled with variants of the pattern stuff I did in the show. I like books! I’m kind of tired of screens! I wish I was friends with a wealthy and eccentric publisher. I also really miss having access to the UCLA print lab, where I could just print, guillotine and glue bind books myself with whatever weird paper I could find!
