Ball Bounce Lesson

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to differentiate between “timing” and “spacing” in traditional animation.
Process & Discussion
- We’re going to make some sad flipbooks bouncy
- Each one of you gets a flipbook. In it are 25 numbered pages, each with a circle on it
- Flip the book. Huh. The circle is moving I guess?
- Let’s make it bouncy. What are some ways to make it feel like the ball is bouncing? Discuss.
- Let’s execute our strategy, we can add in-between pages, remove pages and redraw pages as needed.
- For drawing in-betweens, take two cards with circles on them, click on the white image on this page on your phone or tablet to use as a light-table, align the two pages you are in-betweening, put a new card on top. Draw your new circle in-between the other two. Give the page a number inbetween the other two pages.
- For redrawing a circle in the same position, overlay a new page on the old one, copy the number, draw the circle in the same position but with a different shape if needed.
Assesment
- Reassemble your stack of pages, Flip them! How does it feel? IS IT BOUNCY?
- Lets talk about the steps we took to fix our flip-book and introduce some animation terms for the changes we made.
